How to create a snowman: a 3-day tutorial

Posted on December 20th, 2007 by The_Chemist under: Tutorials with 7 Comments so far.

As promised here comes my very first tutorial. With Christmas fast approaching I’ve decided to make one for the season. The one that I’ll be teaching you is an in-depth beginners tutorial on how to create a snowman in which you can create some colorful postcards out of it just like what I’ve made below and also other cool stuff for the christmas. For some you may find this a little to detailed but I’ve created this one specifically for those who want to learn the basics of Illustrator. I’ll also mention some shortcuts I used while making this tutorial. This will be our day 1.

Software used: Adobe Illustrator CS2 - you may use other similar vector-based editing software but the instructions written are made to work well on Adobe Illustrator CS2.

  • Difficulty: Beginner - Intermediate

For the 2nd day tutorial: How to create a snowman : Coloring

For the 3rd day tutorial: How to create a snowman: Additional Elements

If you’re interested on how this is done then join me and follow through.

Ok let’s get on with the character, actually it’s pretty simple, here’s what we’ll need:

  • Snow, Lots of it.
  • 1 Magician’s Hat
  • 2 Twigs (any type of tree would do as long as it’s brown)
  • 1 carrot (just take the orange part)
  • 1 Scarf (choose a clean one)
  • and coals, coals, coals…ooops almost forgot, coals

Put them all together and voila!!…our snowman.

Okay, okay…now let’s get serious. hehe

Open up Illustrator and let’s do some character designing. Set the size of the art board to 500 width and 500 height.

The first step in the creation of snowman is to start with the line-art.

Chemist2dio Labs Theme Revamped

Chemist2dio Labs Theme Reloaded

As you may have noticed I’ve modified some parts of my blog and decided to tidy things up a bit as I think it’s lacking personality. With a little help from my PHP guru friend, I decided to make some tweaking to wpdesigner’s Lust Theme.

Looking at my blog theme layout, I think it could use a little small modifications. I can say that It says less of who I am and what I’m doing, the sidebar is kind of messy and the font size just doesn’t fit my personality, I’m more of a minimalist type. I also removed the title as I think the banner and the header part seems occupying much of the upper part. I also made subscription options prominent(I guess) as stated by Copyblogger. I also added some icons and will continue to add some more. I did some modifications for the comments and the entry as well.

So what do you think of the new layout?

Let me out of the box!

Box

It’s really hard to write something especially when you’re working fulltime at the office. Even though you the have passion to do it, you only have little time to create new stuff. ah…so many things to do, so little time.

I can still remember those days of working outside the box…freedom. I can do thrice or more than what I can do right now, I can continue to post more, create more freebies, learn new stuff like PHP, continue my studies in Maya and After Effects. Having so many things done at work I wasn’t able to follow my routine of having to posts new stuff every 2 to 3 on a weekly basis. sigh!

Anyways I’ll try to post some more, so keep checking back. I’ve been writing a variety of tutorials as promised, I’ll share it once I got time and get things organized.
